is a multidisciplinary designer and researcher based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

My goal is to develop a roaming historiography based on a series of interrelated photographs from the RJM collection. By specifically engaging with the photographers or the original owners of the images, figures such as Hans Helfritz, I seek to reconstruct what lies beyond the frame of the image and to evoke the ghosts of the subjects and geographies captured in his colonial gaze.

In my research process, I will not necessarily strive for verisimilitude, but will reassemble the material in ways that evoke other readings and question the author. History is often written without us, in spite of us. And within these contested areas of history, I will not attempt to fill gaps in knowledge, but instead assert fictions or counter-narratives within these holes, building stories out of mistranslations, shadows, and unverified assertions. Experimenting with narrative devices such as satire and science fiction, and extending the digital tools from my practice, I propose to create an interactive digital narrative from the collection.
